What is internet calling or VoIP?

Traditionally we used the old copper line technology as a carrier for our voice. This is getting very old and outdated. The new technology is using the internet as a carrier, so if you are paying for Internet Services already, why not make your phone calls this way as well. In many cases, it is a lot cheaper.
